Senior Communications and Content Officer

Working on behalf of a Local Authority, Aatom Recruitment has an opportunity for Senior Communications and Content Officer (Digital and engagement) (PO4) on a 3 month contract with a possibility of an extension.

This position will be a total of 35 hours per week, with hours from 09:00am – 17:00pm.

Job Purpose:

To engage residents and other stakeholders with council priorities through the development and delivery of creative and high quality content across a range of on and offline channels (both council run and owned by others).

Working across a range of traditional and digital channels including the corporate website, microsites, social media and print publications (such as the residents’ magazine, posters, direct mail etc…), the postholder will play a key role in telling the council’s story, communicating the corporate priorities and creating compelling campaigns about the work the council is doing to make Islington fairer. They will need to juggle multiple projects, delivering high quality, engaging content and campaigns on time and on message.

Job Specific Accountabilities:

• To support the Communications and Content Manager to develop, implement and deliver a digital communications and engagement strategy to engage residents and other key stakeholders with the council’s vision and priorities, support behaviour change and promote and protect the council’s reputation.
• To play a key role across social media platforms – both those accounts and feeds managed by the council and by others, ensuring that opportunities to increase engagement with target audiences about the council’s work is maximised and that the council’s messages, position and brand is both protected and enhanced. As part of this, ensure content is timely, creative and targeted and makes positive use of gifs, videos and so on to reach the people we most want to engage.
• To ensure content on our corporate website is relevant and up to date working with departments to draft clear and engaging web ready content published via our CMS system (currently sitecore).
• To play a key role in the creation and maintenance of campaign specific microsites, using wordpress to publish high quality content.
• To contribute to the creation of entries to corporate awards including the MJ awards and LGC awards.
• To develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with a range of colleagues across the council and external partners, including Digital Services, providing professional advice and guidance as required, and to help resolve technical problems.
• To contribute to a forward planning process to co-ordinate work across the Communications and Change team.
• To manage and monitor the budget for communication projects, whilst taking every opportunity to explore and secure economies of scale, synergy and effectiveness.
• To support the work of the media team as required, including providing occasional weekend cover of the duty media phone.
• The postholder may be required to work some weekends and evenings
• To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.
• To contribute to the reputation and positioning of the Communications and Change function, both in a personal capacity and as part of a wider Chief Executive’s team.

Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

• Significant experience of digital communications and campaigns, including developing and managing social media in a corporate environment as a reputation management and community engagement tool; creating e-newsletters; creating high quality, internet-ready content; and optimising paid and natural search and paid-advertising.
• Excellent copywriting skills with the ability to make complex ideas clear and easy to understand, using plain English. Ability to use video and photo editing products to produce internet-ready content. The ability to make ideas interesting and engaging; to pitch them using the correct tone of voice, and targeted appropriately to the audience. To have attention to detail to be able to edit copy swiftly and accurately.
• Good understanding of the importance of branding, with experience of the application of house style and visual identity across the full range of media.
• Excellent verbal presentation skills including the ability to present and explain communications concepts to internal and external audiences.
• Excellent organisational, project management, performance management and financial management skills with a methodical approach to ensuring best quality.
